You will spend the rest of your life trying to convince people that they should take you at your word. It is easier to convince people that you are right if they have realized that you will admit your mistake, when you are wrong.
3.- Learn to be a leader
Develop your leadership skills early on by taking on new challenges, seeking mentorship from top employees/peers, developing your expertise in a practice area, developing your distinctive brand.
4.- Look for mentors
Climbing the ladder in the competitive legal arena requires the support of a sponsor who will advocate for your success. A sponsor simply bets on your success and supports you. They are a stakeholder in the organization that has a seat at the table, with the people who make the decisions.
5.- Find what works for you
Remember that the mountains of advice everyone is eager to give you is filtered through the lens of their own experience. Identify what brings you joy in the workplace, and work with your employer and mentors to leverage those experiences.
6.- Take ownership of your tasks
Act as if you are the only person responsible for the project and treat it as if you were preparing the final product for presentation. If you take ownership of your tasks, you will be successful.
7.- Prioritize your health
Take intentional time for yourself every day, whether it’s meditation, yoga, or a walk outside the office. Be self-aware and recognize if stressors are escalating and you need to talk to someone!
8.- Do not burn your letters
People leave workplaces all the time and are at different stages in their careers. Try to end your jobs on good terms.
9.- Learning lasts a lifetime.
As long as you fully commit every day to learning, listening, and putting in the time and effort to be the best you can be, you will set yourself up to become a successful attorney—and a role model for new attorneys.
