Here are the most common types of dog training collars. You might find one of them useful for your dog’s training.

Flat Buckle Collar

It is the most popular and probably the oldest type of collar in the world. It is made of a simple strip of leather or nylon with a flat metal or plastic buckle attached to one end of the strap to hold the strap when it is put around the dog’s neck. Buckle collars do not technically fall under the training collars category because it has a tendency to create dog leash pulling behavior.

Choke chain or Slip Dog Collar

Choke chain or slip dog collar is one of the most widely used training collars in the world today. It is made of a chain-and-collar combination that tightens when you pull the leash. This creates a choking effect on the dog. You can loosen the collar by releasing the pressure when your dog behaves or stops pulling.

The use of choke chain collar is limited as it can cause injury to the dog’s neck if used for a long time. It’s not advisable to use this training collar on dogs below six months old.

Prong Collar

Prong collar is another type of training collar that has been around for quite a time. It is much like a choke chain collar, but its major difference with the choke chain is its touch on the dog’s neck. Most common dog training collars have full contact with your dog’s neck. But the contact of the prong collar on your dog’s neck lies at the tip of its prongs which are quite painful. Despite this, many users of this collar noticed that it produces less physical damage to the dog than the other types of dog training collars.

Prong collars should be used with caution and attention as it has a tendency to stress and cause psychological damage to dogs. These can lead to handler aggression.

Martingale Collar

Martingale collars are considered by many as the humane collar amongst the different types of dog training collars. This collar is fitted with a steel ‘eye’ on both ends. A small chain is then looped around the two ‘eyes’ with its ends held together by a smaller loop where the leash is connected. Unlike other collars, martingale collars can give you control over your dog without choking it. It is commonly used on dogs whose heads are smaller than their necks.

Head Halter

Designed to imitate the function of a halter to a horse, the head halter dog training strap is made to turn the dog’s head sideways whenever he pulls or misbehaves. Dogs cannot adapt quickly to this type of collar. Yet, it is one of the types that have the least occurrence of injury.

Shock Collars

Also known by other terms as e-collars and remote training collars, shock collars are dog training collars which are designed to deliver shocks of varying degrees and lengths to a dog by means of a remote-controlled electronic apparatus that’s fitted into the collar. But not all shock collars are built solely to produce shock. There are models that are designed to beep, vibrate, and shock. It’s all up to the handler which mode to use depending on the dog’s temperament and response.

Shock collars are one of the most controversial dog training products to hit the market. Many animal lovers and animal rights advocates associate this to cruelty. If you want to use it for your dog, you should educate yourself about it. Ask for the opinion of professionals. This will enable you to make an informed decision about it.

These are some of the most popular types of dog training collars available in the market today. Dog training is not easy, but if you do it with passion and patience, you will produce a dog that behaves like a person.
